Can she sue for grandparent’s rights?

Here’s the fine points:

My husband and I were talking the other night about our (future) children and all the issues involved with them.

His family is wonderful, as is most of mine, but my biological mother was place in jail when I was 14 for neglect and abuse of my siblings and I.

My mother has consistently denied that she was ever responsible for the things she did to us. (Even though she was arrested and pleaded guilty)

She continues to have a negative influence in my life and our marriage, phone calls where she is asking if my Dad (who recently passed away) was dead yet, how stout I’ve gotten, etc.

My husband and I both feel stongly that if she does have any part in our children’s lives that it be strictly supervised, as she is not to be trusted.

We don’t have children yet, but we want to be prepared for the worst. Knowing her, she will probrobly be vindictive and overly-emotional about the whole thing.

We live in Alaska, and she is in Minnesota.
in answer to the most recent–(regarding my putting up with it)
I have, in fact, limited my contact to emails only at this point and have not physically seen her in about 4 years.
I am a Christian and beleive that I need to honor her…but I draw the line when it comes to endangering myself and especially my family.

Anyone can sue for anything, but it doesn’t mean she’ll get it. It takes an extremely strong argument for grandparents to win civil rights and ordinarily involves parental neglect or abuse. As far as I know, most states give parents the right to bring up their children the way they see fit.

One FYI: Make sure that if your child is in day care or school, that you specify your mother is NOT allowed to pick up your child no matter the circumstances.
