Small animals make wonderful pets for small children. There are some delightful small animals that are cute and cuddly and make fantastic pets. Some consider a cat or a dog to be a excellent child’s pet, but I differ.
And there are some risks. There have been instances of children being savaged by their own dog, even small ones.
One of my favourite animals that makes a perfect pet for young children is a guinea pig. My own daughter has her favourite pet piggie and likes him, along with some other pets.
Guinea pigs have some huge advantages as pets. The average guinea pig lives small longer than 5 years and so it’s unlikely that you will be required to take care of him once the children have left home. You can buy one for $20 or so, they don’t get sick too often and they are relatively cheap to feed. They will make fine company for your children and sit on their lap happily being petted at night.
But even though a guinea pig is a small cheap pet you still need to give some thought to several vital matters that are common to all pets. How you will house and feed him.
A guinea pig is housed in a guinea pig cage or what is correctly called a guinea pig hutch. Ordinarily this is kept outside the house. A guinea pig hutch is commonly constructed of wire and lumber, although a excellent material for construction of a hutch can be metal as it is simple to clean and doesn’t harbour smells.
The guinea pig hutch should have a sleeping area where he can sleep free of rain and wind and where he can snuggle up and keep warm. And there will be an outside area where he can exercise and play free from predators.
It’s better to avoid using wire on the floor of a guinea pig hutch as guinea pigs do not like walking on wire and can also get a foot condition called bumble foot which can be quite serious.
It’s not hard to build a hutch yourself relatively cheaply. Most store bought guinea pig hutches are way too small and if you build your own make sure you build a much larger than those you see in the pet shop so he has plenty of room to exercise daily.
All guinea pigs need plenty of bran in their diet. It is not hard to feed them but you do need to learn about what they should and should not eat. Hay is a staple as well as fresh conservational vegetable leaves although lettuce and cabbage should be avoided as they have a tendency to cause diarrhoea. Guinea pig’s like grass.
You need to know that once you buy one, (or more), guinea pigs you are committing to cleaning out their guinea pig cage regularly, as young children will rarely do this do this well. And you also need to ensure that he is regularly groomed to keep his hair in excellent condition and free of knots. This of course is part of the fun.
So if you’re looking for a small, soft and cuddly pet for the children consider a guinea pig. He is the perfect pet provided you house him in a excellent large guinea pig hutch and feed him properly.
